Perhaps the most important voice in the American Civil Rights movement, Martin Luther King, Jr. was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s to lead non-violent protests against segregation laws.

Between 1957 and 1968, King traveled around the country, speaking and appearing wherever there was injustice. His protest in Birmingham, Alabama caught the attention of the entire world in what he called a coalition of conscience. He delivered his “I Have a Dream” address at he Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. to a crowd of 250,000 people, and was the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

Americans celebrate his birth with a “Day of Service” every year in January.
